Gary DiLaura PUBLISHER Roberto Mimmo EXECUTIVE EDITOR Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Allers Delivers Message of Hope and Progress Ahead of Hurricane Ian Anniversary By Richard Luthmann Mayor Dan Allers stood tall, brimming with optimism, as he addressed the press before the one-year mark of Hurricane Ian’s brutal rampage, a Category 4 tempest that ravaged our shores on that fateful September day in 2022. Stepping into the mayor’s shoes just last November, Allers has seen unprecedented challenges during his short tenure. “We strive for daily triumphs, for they culminate into weekly, monthly, and yearly victories,” he declared. After Ian’s initial assault and the ensuing wreckage, a period of assessment followed, where FMB officials sought the low-hanging Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Allers fruit. One shining example emerged in Bayside Park, a swift and community-embraced restoration, which was the venue for the mayor’s presser. Beside him stood Frankie Kropacek, the town's Operations and Compliance Director, as they laid out the town’s designs. Historic Pig-to-Human Heart Transplant Offers Hope Amidst Terminal Heart Disease Page 2 The Sun Bay Paper September 29, 2023 - October 5, 2023 In a groundbreaking medical procedure, surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center have successfully conducted only the second-ever pig-to-human heart transplant, providing a glimmer of hope to patients facing terminal heart disease. On September 20th, Dr. Bartley Griffith and his team achieved this remarkable feat by transplanting a genetically modified pig heart into Mr. Lawrence Faucette, a 58-year-old Navy veteran from Frederick, Maryland. Mr. Faucette, who had been grappling with end-stage heart disease, had exhausted all other treatment options due to pre-existing peripheral vascular disease and internal bleeding complications, rendering him ineligible for a traditional human heart transplant. The surgical triumph has breathed new life into Mr. Faucette. Two days post-surgery, he is now able to breathe independently, and his newly transplanted pig heart is functioning optimally without any assistance from mechanical devices. This remarkable achievement has rekindled hope for Faucette, who shared his feelings in a video message recorded by the hospital before the operation: "Nobody knows from this point forward. At least now I have hope and I have a chance. I will fight tooth and nail for every breath I can take." The road to successful xenotransplantation, the transplantation of animal organs into humans, has been a long and challenging one. Previous attempts at animal-to-human organ transplants had failed due to immediate rejection by the recipients' immune systems. However, scientists have revisited this avenue using pigs genetically modified to make their organs more compatible with human recipients. For this recent attempt, the Maryland researchers obtained special permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under its “compassionate use” program, typically reserved for emergency cases with no alternative options. This unique authorization followed extensive documentation submitted to the FDA, demonstrating the research team’s valuable insights from their earlier attempt in 2022. Though the reasons for the prior patient’s death remain partially unexplained, the medical team, along with Mr. Faucette, understood and accepted the risks involved in this experimental procedure. A critical difference this time is that Faucette, while facing end-stage heart failure, was not as near death as the prior patient. By Friday following the surgery, his new pig heart was functioning effectively without the need for supportive machinery, marking a significant milestone in this pioneering field. This compassionate use case offers some insights into how pig organs function in humans, although it is not a substitute for more formal testing. Karen Maschke, a research scholar at the Hastings Center specializing in ethics and policy recommendations for xenotransplant clinical trials, noted that FDA's allowance for this second case suggests that a clinical trial for pig heart transplants is not yet on the immediate horizon. The pig heart used in the transplant, provided by Blacksburg, Virginia-based Revivicor, featured ten genetic modifications, including the removal of certain pig genes and the addition of human genes to enhance compatibility with the human immune system. This monumental achievement represents a beacon of hope for individuals on the waiting list for organ transplants in the United States, where over 6,000 patients die each year due to a shortage of available organs. While xenotransplantation offers potential solutions, it also presents unique risks, such as the transmission of unknown pathogens and heightened immune responses. The FDA's compassionate use program played a pivotal role in making this historic surgery possible, enabling the transplantation of a genetically modified pig's heart to Mr. Faucette when it was the only remaining option. As Faucette and his family look ahead, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining his body's acceptance of the transplanted pig organ and any potential challenges that may arise. Ann Faucette, Lawrence's wife, expressed their hope: "We have no expectations other than hoping for more time together. That could be as simple as sitting on the front porch and having coffee together." Alfredo DiPasquale

September 29, 2023 - October 5, 2023 The Sun Bay Paper Page 4 Think our immigration / Naturalization Laws are tough? Mexico's Immigration Laws Sunbay Staff writer Public sources Mexico Constitution Mexico has stricter immigration laws than the United States of America. UNDER MEXICO’S IMMIGRATION LAW (GENERAL LAW ON POPULATION): Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society: Foreigners are admitted into Mexico “according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress.” (Article 32) Immigration officials must “ensure” that “immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance” and for their dependents. (Article 34) Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets “the equilibrium of the national demographics,” when foreigners are deemed detrimental to “economic or national interests,” when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican laws, and when “they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy.” (Article 37) The Secretary of Governance may “suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest.” (Article 38) Mexican authorities must keep track of every single person in the country: Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request, i.e., to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants. (Article 73) A National Population Registry keeps track of “every single individual who comprises the population of the country,” and verifies each individual’s identity. (Articles 85 and 86) A national Catalog of Foreigners tracks foreign tourists and immigrants (Article 87), and assigns each individual with a unique tracking number (Article 91). Foreigners with fake papers, or who enter the country under false pretenses, may be imprisoned: Foreigners with fake immigration papers may be fined or imprisoned. (Article 116) Foreigners who sign government documents “with a signature that is false or different from that which he normally uses” are subject to fine and imprisonment. (Article 116) Foreigners who fail to obey the rules will be fined, deported, and/ or imprisoned as felons: Foreigners who fail to obey a deportation order are to be punished. (Article 117) Foreigners who are deported from Mexico and attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. (Article 118) Foreigners who violate the terms of their visa may be sentenced to up to six years in prison (Articles 119, 120 and 121). Foreigners who misrepresent the terms of their visa while in Mexico – such as working with out a permit – can also be imprisoned. Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The General Law on Population says, “A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally.” (Article 123) Foreigners with legal immigration problems may be deported from Mexico instead of being imprisoned. (Article 125) Foreigners who “attempt against national sovereignty or security” will be deported. (Article 126) Mexicans who help illegal aliens enter the country are themselves considered criminals under the law: AMexican who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to up to five years in prison. (Article 127) Shipping and airline companies that bring undocumented foreigners into Mexico will be fined. (Article 132) UNDER MEXICO’S CONSTITUTION The Mexican constitution expressly forbids non-citizens to participate in the country’s political life. Non-citizens are forbidden to participate in demonstrations or express opinions in public about domestic politics. Article 9 states, “only citizens of the Republic may do so to take part in the political affairs of the country.” Article 33 is unambiguous: “Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country.” The Mexican constitution denies fundamental property rights to foreigners. If foreigners wish to have certain property rights, they must renounce the protection of their own governments or risk confiscation. Foreigners are forbidden to own land in Mexico within 100 kilometers of land borders or within 50 kilometers of the coast. Article 27 states, "Only Mexicans by birth or naturalization and Mexican companies have the right to acquire ownership of lands, waters, and their appurtenances, or to obtain concessions for the exploitation of mines or of waters. The State may grant the same right to foreigners, provided they agree before the Ministry of Foreign Relations to consider themselves as nationals in respect to such property, and bind themselves not to invoke the protection of their governments in matters relating thereto; under penalty, in case of non compliance with this agreement, of forfeiture of the property acquired to the Nation. Land Ownership and Employment Under no circumstances may foreigners acquire direct ownership of lands or waters within a zone of one hundred kilometers along the frontiers and of fifty kilometers along the shores of the country.” (Emphasis added) The Mexican constitution denies equal employment rights to immigrants, even legal ones, in the public sector. “Mexicans shall have priority over foreigners under equality of circumstances for all classes of concessions and for all employment, positions, or commissions of the Government in which the status of citizenship is not indispensable. In time of peace no foreigner can serve in the Army nor in the police or public security forces.” (Article 32) The Mexican constitution guarantees that immigrants will never be treated as real Mexican citizens, even if they are legally naturalized. Article 32 bans foreigners, immigrants, and even naturalized citizens of Mexico from serving as military officers, Mexican-flagged ship and airline crew, and chiefs of seaports and airports: “In order to belong to the National Navy or the Air Force, and to discharge any office or commission, it is required to be a Mexican by birth. This same status is indispensable for captains, pilots, masters, engineers, mechanics, and in general, for all personnel of the crew of any vessel or airship protected by the Mexican merchant flag or insignia. It is also necessary to be Mexican by birth to discharge the position of captain of the port and all services of practique and airport commandant, as well as all functions of customs agent in the Republic.” An immigrant who becomes a naturalized Mexican citizen can be stripped of his Mexican citizenship if he lives again in the country of his origin for more than five years, under Article 37. Mexican-born citizens risk no such loss. Foreign-born, naturalized Mexican citizens may not become federal lawmakers (Article 55), cabinet secretaries (Article 91) or supreme court justices (Article 95). The president of Mexico must be a Mexican citizen by birth AND his parents must also be Mexican-born citizens (Article 82), thus giving secondary status to Mexican-born citizens born of immigrants. The Mexican constitution singles out “undesirable aliens.” Article 11 guarantees federal protection against “undesirable aliens resident in the country.”The Mexican constitution provides the right of private individuals to make citizen’s arrests. Article 16 states, “in cases of flagrante delicto, any person may arrest the offender and his accomplices, turning them over without delay to the nearest authorities.” Therefore, the Mexican constitution appears to grant Mexican citizens the right to arrest illegal aliens and hand them over to police for prosecution. The Mexican constitution states that foreigners may be expelled for any reason and without due process. According to Article 33, “the Federal Executive shall have the exclusive power to compel any foreigner whose remaining he may deem inexpedient to abandon the national territory immediately and without the necessity of previous legal action. Sun Bay Paper…WOW! Let’s adopt Mexico’s Immigration and Naturalization Laws!
September 29, 2023 - October 5, 2023 The Sun Bay Paper Page 5 The Right Side WHY…? WHY… would America’s leaders destroy our energy independence…forcing us to buy products produced by our enemies, and again, make us dependent on those who want to kill us…Russia, China, Iran, OPEC?! WHY… would those same leaders destroy the security we had on America’s Southern Borders and allow the good, the bad, and the worst bad, unchecked into our Nation … by open Borders… and prevent our Border protectors (Border Patrol, ICE, Customs, Immigration) from doing their jobs? WHY…would those same leaders direct America into a direction of certain failure by reducing our power plant output by over 45% (from 2008 to 2016, Obama’s war on US Fossil Fuel production), and at the same time, increase the demand for electric power by becoming dependent on electric powered transportation, all at a time that the leaders have NO REPLACEMENT for the electric power they have taken away and continue to take away? If you can grasp this concept… the OVERTHROW of your Constitutional Republic is in progress…you will completely understand what they are up to… A relatively small group of Radical, “Progressive” liberal Democraps, led by a former president, Hussein Obama, have gained control of your government by numerous deceptive, surreptitious, fraudulent, illegal methods that are working, funded by a very wealthy Oligarch, George Soros, my opinion. An oligarch is a word that refers to wealthy elites, people who don’t just hold power and money but who control enough resources to influence politics or government in a meaningful way. This Obama-led coalition, in my opinion, is directing OBiden’s every move. Obama is doing all J.Gary DiLaura FBI RED Retired Extremely Dangerous he can to “Fundamentally change America”, his words, into a Socialist Islamic State, my words! They have convinced a relatively small group, combined of some ignorant, greedy, and corrupt… followers, who have gained power and wealth by various methods… mostly illegal! By using the deceptions of Global Warming (now defunct), which has been replaced by the “control” of Climate Change (an impossible task)…some have gained great personal wealth and power on their way to making America the Socialist nation that Obama desires. See if any elected officials or the Obama and Biden families have invested in Electric Transportation in China, Russia, or any other foreign governments… one way or another! Look no further, though, than Hunter Biden’s emails which will be prima facie evidence in the trial of his entire crime family! Why give - turn over - Afghanistan to China…it has the largest Lithium deposits in the world! Obama appointees and liars like Brennen, Clapper, and Comey…lied under oath about minor things like illegal eavesdropping of Citizens and reporters… admitting the same AFTER the statute of limitations expired! Who put them up to all that? Once you grasp that concept…the OVERTHROW OF AMERICA, which, to most of America, is obvious…makes sense. Just follow Obama’s stated beliefs in the teachings of his Mohamed/Allah and his two favorite Professors, Cloward and Priven! They explain how to “Fundamentally Change America, into a Socialist nation, by bankrupting all our social systems and give away programs” … by flooding America’s borders and spending her into oblivion… cutting off electric power, cutting off food supplies, and doing anything that helps CREATE CHAOS…to force government control! Now …what if the majority of Scientists, power experts, and most Americans, including me, all say that… 1-To stop fossil fuel energy production before replacing that power with reliable electric power is a direct road to disaster for America, an act of Treason, and the taking of our “Unalienable Rights to Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness”? 2-Neither Solar nor Wind power is capable, from a Science, cost, reliability, or mathematical perspective … of EVER becoming a replacement for fossil fuels … augment… maybe…but replace… NEVER! If you want to eliminate fossil fuel power plants, then build Nuclear Plants and EMP Proof the entire grid! From a column on 1/15/22 by Dr. Jay Lehr and Tom Harris, Geo Engineer, Heartland Institute, and well-respected scientists, both: “Electric Cars will never become the mainstream of transportation … In order to match the 2,000 cars that a typical filling station can service in a busy 12 hours (on fossil fuel), an EV (Electric Vehicle) charging station would require 600, 50-watt chargers at an estimated cost of $24 million and a supply of 30 megawatts of power from the grid. That is enough to power 20,000 homes”. That, folks, is ONE “gas” station for EVs! Also, an electric-powered car crash doesn’t just cause a fire….it produces numerous, extremely violent explosions, putting extremely toxic, carcinogenic fumes into the air, making survival IMPOSSIBLE. What kind of crash tests did Electric Car Manufacturers conduct? None like what is all over the internet!! Granted, a tank full of gas is a bomb looking for a place to happen…however…a tank of gas exploding after a crash doesn’t compare to the devastating explosions and resulting damage to the people and Environment when two or more electric cars blow up! By the way, diesel fuel doesn’t detonate; it burns but doesn’t blow up like a bomb. It is cheaper to produce, engines last longer, and get better mileage. That’s why over-the-road trucks utilize diesel exclusively, and diesel anything, car or truck, is MUCH cheaper to build than electric…plus it could replace all gas-driven vehicles, unlike electric! I created and then Directed the FBI Environmental Crimes Program for the entire Western District of NY (all 17 counties) and was, at that time, an expert on Environmental Crimes such as “Clean air” and Clean Water,” both Statutes of the EPA Big 8 Laws…, but with a Bachelor’s of Science in Metallurgy and a minor in Chemistry and knowledge of Environmental Hazardous Waste Crimes, I can safely say that, based upon today’s technology the ONLY current and viable replacement for fossil fuel is nuclear power and I defy any scientist to disprove that! Just add it up…it takes a 75-amp service JUST for one EV charger to charge one car overnight! No neighborhoods in the US www.therightsidejgarydilaura.com have the line power to charge more than about six cars in a single neighborhood block. How many cars in your neighborhood? The average electric service to an American home is currently 100 amp service! The power lines, the transfer stations, and the transformers ALL must be updated/ replaced if we had the power output…which we do not! There’s more bad news… many of those millions of transformers still contain PCBs, Poly Chlorinated Biphenyls…a coolant, a bi-product from Agent Orange, and an extremely hazardous carcinogen… that cannot be landfilled…what to do with all that…geniuses? There isn’t enough power, now, on the 3 Grids, to provide 100% of the power America needs, NOW, directly AND solely because of Hussein Obama’s closing 45% of the coal-supplied electric grid! That’s a fact as clear as the nose on your face. Grasp that very true FACT!! That’s because of what…and this is an indisputable fact…because of what Hussein Obama, on his own, by executive orders and by weaponizing the EPA... shut down… 45% of the fossil fuel electric power plants (coal, oil, and Natural gas), from 2008 to 2016… GONE! WITH NO REPLACEMENT! Did that weaken and enable, abet, and help Iran, Russia, China, N Korea…by weakening the US? Cont on pg 6

If so, isn’t that Treason? When Obama took office, we had 125% Grid capacity…when he left, he had reduced it to 85% of needed Grid capacity…we are, right now …at least 15% SHORT of what we need…so what happens… brownouts and catastrophes like Texas?! Obama shut down fossil fuel plants and built Solar and Wind! Remember Solyndra? Hussein gave a $535 million loan, then three months BEFORE they filed for Bankruptcy, Obama gave them another $500,000!! What? Did Hussein secretly invest in Solyhdra? Neither Solar nor Wind works when there’s no Sunshine or too much Wind! Does that sound like most of the time to me?! For certain, that’s what happens during storms and most winters… when we need electricity the MOST! So let’s understand this …. SOLAR AND WIND NEVER WORK WHEN WE REALLY NEED THEM?! That’s coming to a neighborhood near you if OBiden/Obama, et al., continue to Rule America… my opinion! It already has, you say? Elect Trump… or Trump Jr, our Trump Card!!!All because of Climate Change….folks smarten up… chickens don’t have lips…the moon is not made of che ese…you can’t pick up a piece of poop from the clean end, AND we cannot control Climate Change!? If Mother Nature wants snow, rain, wind, calm, hot or cold…she will get it…no matter what scientific scholars/geniuses like Hussein Obama, Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi, and AOC have to say! “Green Morons”, have no idea what they are doing! Science hasn’t figured out how to dispose of Lithium-ion used-up batteries… they can’t bury them nor burn them …so now what… recycle…that’s even MORE dangerous. Good luck with that. What will you do when you find out how much more toxic, carcinogenic, dangerous, as well as 1000s of times as costly it is to dispose of lithium-ion batteries, which also contain toxic cadmium and cobalt, and other known carcinogenic elements? Compare that to the by-product of fossil fuel…Carbon Dioxide, which produces oxygen for you to breathe and grows green life…all your food!! The “ium” elements kill people … fossil fuels safely provide life’s needs!! It’s all upside-down! Of all the fuels that the world uses to produce power… thanks to whatever God you pray to… the most plentiful, safest, least expensive are also the least damaging… Water for Hydro Power and, you guessed it …Fossil Fuels! Poor St. Clare Nuns Thank FMB Community By Sun Bay Staff Hurricane Ian left San Damiano Monastery and Ascension Parish Church on Fort Myers Beach in ruins. The Poor Clares order lives a cloistered and secluded life to foster intense prayer. The nuns do not minister outside their residence but dedicate their lives to contemplation and prayer for others. Since Ian, the Poor Clares have been displaced. We were able to reach Sister Mary Frances of Jesus Fortin, the Abess of the monastery, who provided this message: “We are grateful to all those who have helped us through this ordeal. We have moved four times since Hurricane Ian. We are finally at our own address, although it is temporary until we can build a new monastery. Unfortunately, we cannot go back to the beach. We love our friends and neighbors there, but since the chapel is going to be torn down and it would take at least four years to rebuild a chapel, we have decided to relocate. You are all in our prayers, and our memories of life on the beach are precious to us. We do not forget you in our prayers, especially with the challenges you all face. September 29, 2023 - October 5, 2023 The Sun Bay Paper Page 8 A Special Economic Opinion Piece Navigating Economic Risks: A Familiar Echo from 2007 In retrospect, the headlines of 2007 were marked by optimism, bolstered by predictions of a soft landing for the economy from institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the Federal Reserve. It was an era where rising imbalances were largely dismissed, partly because market participants and economists often viewed central banks as adept conductors, steering the economic vehicle. Interestingly, the current optimism about the U.S. economy echoes the sentiment of that bygone era. While some may argue that this time is distinct and will not lead to a crisis akin to 2008, they are correct in asserting that each crisis has its unique characteristics. However, a common counterargument when discussing the risks of a recession is the belief that the Federal Reserve will inject whatever liquidity is required, with quantitative easing regarded as the antidote to prevent a crisis. Yet, if the only remedy to avert a 2008-style contraction is monetary easing, then the peril of stagflation becomes even more pronounced. Thus, for those apprehensive about a recession, stagflation may be the more immediate concern. It has been emphasized previously that we find ourselves amid a private-sector recession camouflaged by unprecedented government spending. Recent Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) readings corroborate this view. S&P Global highlights that the “further loss of service sector momentum weighs on overall U.S. economic performance,” with manufacturing firms registering a decline in production and service sector firms experiencing their slowest rise in business activity in eight months. Additionally, U.S. consumer confidence dipped in August, reflecting a decline in the Conference Board consumer confidence index. More worrisome is the fact that the services sector and consumption have been buoyed by mounting debt levels. As of July 2023, the personal savings rate had fallen to 3.5 percent, well below the pre-pandemic average of 6.9 percent. Moreover, total credit card debt surpassed $1 trillion in the second quarter of 2023, marking a record total household debt of $17 trillion, as reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Despite elevated inflation levels, the U.S. government continues its prodigious spending, leading to an increased consumption of the currency it issues. Notably, Tim Congdon at the Institute of International Monetary Research has underscored the direct link between inflationary surges and broad money growth due to expanding government deficit spending. This perspective is corroborated by studies conducted by Claudio Borio at the Bank of International Settlements. Of concern is the staggering figure that threatens trust in the U.S. currency and the sustainability of public finances: the U.S. deficit totaled $2.474 trillion in the year leading up to July 2023. With nominal GDP during the same period at approximately $27 trillion, the deficit represented over 9 percent of GDP. The rise in debt levels is effectively propping up GDP in the United States. Simultaneously, inflation expectations remain high, the full impact of rate hikes has yet to materialize, and monetary aggregate declines indicate that the burden of monetary policy contraction falls squarely on the private sector. A burgeoning government deficit portends either higher taxes, increased inflation, or greater debt in the future. The belief in a soft landing persists largely because growing fiscal and debt imbalances have not substantially impacted the broader economy. While there may be validity in the notion that a recession is not imminent, the longer the delay in confronting an inevitable recession, the more severe its impact will be. Attempting to mask what would have been a reasonable technical recession after an enormous monetary and fiscal boost in 2020–21 may ultimately exacerbate the situation. Economic agents could be misled into thinking that rate hikes will have minimal impact and that credit supply will remain unaltered. Monetary aggregates have already started to rise well before the battle against inflation has concluded. Money supply growth has rebounded, and while rates have yet to increase, both core and headline inflation remain significantly above target. Furthermore, if the only factor preventing a 2008-style recession is further quantitative easing, then the recipe for stagflation is complete. Extensive liquidity injections aimed at sustaining markets may exacerbate the situation when coupled with persistently high government deficit spending. This is particularly concerning since the government appears reluctant to curtail expenditures. Unlike the previous instance, the economy's starting point is not deflation but escalating core and headline prices. The government must trim unnecessary spending and significantly reduce the deficit, while the Federal Reserve should tighten its balance sheet and resist the temptation to purchase long-dated treasuries from banks at the first sign of market concern. Additional government stimulus packages will merely compound an already low-growth, high-debt, and low-productivity economy. Monetary contraction should be targeted at reducing public sector imbalances rather than constricting the private sector. There can be no soft landing when the government's role in the economy expands, simultaneously squeezing and displacing the private sector. Warning signs are becoming increasingly apparent, and disregarding them would be a grave dereliction of responsibility. Cont from pg 1 Parks, and Recreation. “Little League Baseball and 7-Eleven made significant contributions. We couldn’t have done it without them,” Mayor Allers acknowledged. The vision for the future, a resurgence of beauty and rebirth, was symbolized by the impending rededication of Times Square’s new clock, which, while iconic, would inevitably bear the marks of post-Ian transformation. Yet, Allers viewed this transformation as a necessity, not a calamity. “We’re definitely going to see some change,” he conceded. “It’s not cheap to build with the new building standards. Property values are up after the storm.” Allers confirmed that the Miami-based Corradino Group was guiding the town’s revival plan. Amid their rebuilding commitment, the mayor vowed to maintain an amenable stance while preserving the familial essence of Fort Myers Beach. He cited the cottages on the island's north end as an example, where existing square footage could be reclaimed, but additional construction required a variance. A pragmatist, Allers was mindful that not everyone would find solace in the decisions made but counseled residents to remain proactive during the process. “Be vocal. We have FEMA and State of Florida requirements we must adhere to, but we will be as flexible as we can,” he remarked. The mayor also confirmed that while the focus of the town is on rebuilding, there are certain questions better left to Lee County officials. “We are not in the business of landlord agreements,” he confirmed. Challenges with FEMA loomed large, as many property owners lamented the inescapable grip of mold, a byproduct of prolonged FMB Mayor Dan Allers (l) with Operations and Compliance Director Frankie Kropacek (r) speaks in the Bayside Park at the corner of Old San Carlos Boulevard and First Street. electrical loss rather than Ian’s initial fury. “FEMA rules and regulations limit the types of power generation equipment that can be delivered to barrier islands and sea-level locations,” said Director Kropacek, who confirmed that the current emergency management plan addresses poststorm power restoration and generation abilities. “We saw several private interests bring in machinery without restriction,” Mayor Allers said. An unnamed government procurement specialist suggested that federal authorities could have done more, particularly in emergencies. "Emergency declarations by Governor DeSantis and President Biden should have overridden FEMA rules. I can't help but think that a certain Delaware beach community would have received more federal resources without limitations, resulting in a quicker recovery and increased economic activity if faced with similar challenges," the source noted. Mayor Allers saw promise on the horizon, notably in burgeoning economic activity and development prospects, particularly in the realm of land use applications. With paperwork already in hand from Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina and more applications from Moss Marina and Sea Gate Development Group, among others, hope was on the horizon. When queried about Margaritaville's future, Allers commended their resilience during Ian's onslaught and their commendable partnership with Fort Myers Beach. "Margaritaville bore the brunt of the storm surge and played a crucial role in protecting a significant part of the island from further damage,” he said. The mayor highlighted the excellent working relationship shared by Margaritaville and FMB town officials, and their positive collaboration with the community. FDAAccused of Going "Rogue" Over New COVID-19 Boosters By Sun Bay Paper Staff Virologist Dr. Robert Malone has criticized the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), accusing the agency of deviating from its own rules and regulations by recommending new COVID-19 boosters with limited clinical trial data regarding their efficacy and safety. In a recent interview, Dr. Malone described the FDA's actions as going "rogue." Dr. Malone's comments came on the same day the FDA cleared new COVID-19 vaccines to address waning vaccine effectiveness. He argued that the absence of human clinical trial data demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of these updated vaccines should have prevented their approval. According to Dr. Malone, the FDA authorized the new vaccines based on the premise that "neutralizing antibodies as detected in mice and their cross-reactivity are correlative protection," which he labeled as a falsehood since there are no established correlates of protection for SARS-CoV-2. The FDA approved Moderna’s and Pfizer’s new mRNA vaccines on September 11 without analyzing data from human trials. The agency stated that its decision was supported by its assessment of “manufacturing data” from vaccine producers and “non-clinical immune response data on the updated formulations.” It argued that the benefit-risk profile of earlier vaccine versions is well understood and that the new vaccines are a good match for current COVID-19 variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended these new vaccines on September 12, urging almost all Americans to get them, including children as young as six months old. The new vaccines target the XBB.1.5 sub-type of the Omicron variant, although this subvariant has largely been replaced by newer strains of the virus. Dr. Joseph Ladapo, Florida's Surgeon General, expressed concern about the limited data and suggested people might be better off without the new shots. He pointed to studies showing the waning effectiveness of previous vaccines over time and raised questions about their safety. CDC Director Mandy Cohen defended the vaccines as effective tools against the virus and stated that they had undergone extensive clinical trials and monitoring for safety. However, critics, including some doctors, have questioned the need for these boosters in younger, healthy individuals. Dr. Ladapo encouraged people to make decisions based on their own judgment and truth, emphasizing the importance of listening to their intuition. A study from January to July 2023 found that individuals who received new COVID-19 booster shots in California state prisons were more likely to contract COVID-19 compared to those who did not receive the boosters. The infection rate among the booster-receiving group was 3.2%, higher than the 2.7% among the unvaccinated. The CDC also recently conceded that the new BA.2.86 strain could cause infections even in individuals previously vaccinated against COVID-19. The agency expressed concerns about the variant's mutations potentially enabling greater evasion of existing immunity from vaccines and prior infections compared to previous variants.
