That prototype is the forerunner of a diverse line of LIDAR sensor products for various applications — the latest of which is smaller than a deck of cards and cheaper than a microwave oven. "The VELABIT" The Velabit achieves its $100 price point by swapping the 1,550-nanometer laser for a cheaper 905-nanometer laser, removing all of the maintenance-intensive moving parts, and using a new internet-connected integrated circuit to handle the computational load of mapping and it looks great doing it too… It’s no wonder the new sensor, which was released in early 2020, has already won a slew of awards, including a Best of What’s New Award from Popular Science and the 2020 Silicon Valley Robotics Innovation Award. Before releasing the Velabit, the company already had a prolific bench of clients and backers, including Hyundai, Ford, and Nikon but since the product launch, its business development has accelerated significantly. It has signed large deals with smart-city monitoring company Outsight, self-driving shuttle manufacturer Local Motors and the University of Nevada. With these kinds of deals in place, it’s easy to see why the company’s revenue last year jumped to approximately $94 million and is expected to swell to $1 billion by 2024. Velodyne had 35 multi-year agreements in place as of six months ago and just this week, the city of Rsselsheim am Main, Germany, has selected Velodyne to deliver an Intelligent Infrastructure Solution to create a city-wide system for truck passage control. Velodyne Lidar Inc. (NASDAQ: VLDR) has not fared well during the recent market plunge which makes it an even better deal!
